Some places felt too big, like the roads were not meant for people to drive next to one another. Inside the store aisles could be so large that there was no chance you would slightly touch the side of another’s pant leg as you passed.
There were lots of places like this- the Walmart on vestal highway, the park behind the highway exit where they went for a walk last week- the field empty with passing spring, or the large empty parking lots which decorated the sides of the road. Lydia would avoid these places, walking instead to the store on the corner. Reassuring herself the double priced American cheese was worth it.
